A Mysterious Event

"The Year of the Ransom."

Julio Vasquez, newly arrived in 1885 from 1533, reports that, in 1533, the mysterious disappearance from within a treasure house of Estaban Tanaquil and Luis Castelar has caused rapidly building hysteria that might have hideous consequences which are not in known history although he also comments:

"'We have not ceased to exist, despite being uptime of [this episode].'" (p. 679)

Everard replies:

"'Which doesn't mean we can't cease...'" (ibid.)

No one can cease to exist in 1885 because of a mysterious event in 1533. There can be alternative timelines in which:

no mysterious event occurs in 1533 and Vasquez, Everard etc exist in 1885;
a mysterious event occurs in 1533 and Vasquez, Everard etc do not exist in 1885;
a mysterious event occurs in 1533 and Vasquez, Everard etc do exist in 1885.

They are in the third alternative. Therefore, the mysterious event has not prevented them from existing although this might be because of actions that they have yet to take.

Kaor, Paul!

I agree. Actions were taken taken which prevented Manse Everard and Julio Vasquez from ceasing to exist. Your third scenario.
