Victoria Nyanza

Poul Anderson, The Stars Are Also Fire, 15.

Venator, making his second appearance, is "...at Victoria Nyanza..." (p. 196) Googling discloses that "Nyanza" means "Lake," thus explaining the name of a fictional planet in Anderson's Technic History. The planet Nyanza is mostly ocean so its name is ironic.

It had never occurred to me to wonder whether "Nyanza" meant anything. This is at least my third reading of The Stars Are Also Fire but only the first time that I remember noticing its use of the word, "Nyanza," familiar from the Technic History.

Read and reread and learn.

Kaor, Paul!

Dang! I've read THE STARS ARE ALSO FIRE at least twice and I don't think I ever noticed that use of "Nyanza" and how it's the name of a planet in "The Game of Glory." Hmmm, so it means "lake"? Not quite appropriate for a mostly oceanic planet!
