A Rich Text

I am closing down for the night but here is one last reflection for today. Poul Anderson's "Star of the Sea" is an extremely rich text:

mythology
history
time travel
nature descriptions
contemporary Amsterdam

The four mythological passages, I-IV, show a development of myth from warlike to peaceful and IV is a prayer ending in Latin:

Ave, Stella Maris!

I did not expect a further rereading of this story to generate so many posts.

Also, although it is not the concluding instalment of the series but is carefully written to fit into an earlier phase of Manse Everard's career, "Star..." is Anderson's last major contribution to the Time Patrol series and, in that sense, can be regarded as the culmination of this series.

We have not as yet reread all the way to its conclusion.

I thought THE SHIELD OF TIME, esp. "Amazement of the World," was the culmination of the Time Patrol stories?

  2. Sean,

Of course it is, as "Delenda Est" originally was. I just put in a bid for "Star of the Sea" to have some comparable importance despite its being placed in the middle of the series in terms of fictional chronology.
