Are aliens likely to arrive any time soon? We do not know but there is no evidence of any on their way.
What Are The Options?
slower or faster than light
oxygen- or hydrogen-breathing or something else
planetary or space-dwelling
organic or post-organic
friendly, hostile or neutral
technologically comparable or superior
exploring, trading, conquering, incorporating, evangelizing or helping
Fallen or unFallen (if applicable)
I (fairly) confidently predict that, if and when any aliens arrive, they will be unlike anything imagined - which is a challenge to sf writers. I do not keep track of current sf. I was a reader of twentieth century sf which for me culminated in Anderson's Genesis in which post-organic intelligences spread from Earth through this galaxy and beyond without apparently encountering any other intelligences.

Kaor, Paul!
The option I am most skeptical about are intelligences which are "post-organic."
It's all very well to insist non-human intelligent beings will be vastly different from us--which I agree with, up to a point. But, if any communication with such beings is going to be possible, then they will have to have some similarities to Homo sapiens.
Ad astra! Sean
