When the black cog, Herning, hired by the halflings, stands out of Mariager Fjord, Poul Anderson describes:

receding hills;

clear day;

dazzling sun;

glittering waves;

skirling wind;

thrumming rigging;

creaking timbers;

surging cutwater;

mewing gulls;

snowstorm-like wings;

smells of salt and tar blowing around.
