Contrast
Outside: wind; rain; gurgling gutters; shimmering pavements; thronging, booming traffic; docks, factories; noise; lights; taverns; restaurants.
Inside: warmth; soft lighting; pastel colors; heirlooms; flames crackling in a stone fireplace; bone candlesticks on the mantelpiece; the Wolf emblem burned in walrus hide.
Misdirection
Silence spreads as a heavily armed Inspectorate patrol marches through Seattle. Inside the warm house, a visitor is announced. Has the patrol come to arrest someone? No, their business must be elsewhere. Iern has been allowed to visit his fellow internee, Plik.
