Other treetop dwellers are to be found:
on Mongo;
on ERB's Venus;
in Eryn Muir of the Dunedain in Montival.
In Eryn Muir, where several large redwoods grow close together, merging platforms supported by carved beams hold an assembly hall that is approached by a suspended foot-bridge, then by a walkway decorated with rose-covered arches, and is surrounded by gardens of flowers, bushes, paths and benches. And I don't like heights.

ReplyDeleteThere was also the Great Trees of Ranau, on the planet Unan Besar, seen in THE PLAGUE OF MASTERS. The Trees were far larger and taller than the redwoods of Terra. Large enough for a single Tree to house an entire clan of the people of Ranau.

DeleteTHE PLAGUE OF MASTERS is one of the Flandry stories I want to reread. It's far more than a simple action/adventure story (and there's nothing wrong with a story being like that, btw).

ReplyDeleteAndre Norton's *Janus* duology, *Judgment On Janus* (1963) and *Victory On Janus* ('66), concerns a humanoid people, the Iftin — hairless, pointy-eared, and green-skinned — who lived among and often IN giant (still-living) hollow trees, "the tower trees of Iftcan."

DeleteReminds me a bit of the humanoid aliens seen in Anderson's THE PEREGRINE. These aliens too lived in hollow, but living trees.

DeleteI did kinda have a few vague thoughts about the "flets" used by the Elves of Lorien in THE LORD OF THE RINGS or the Great Trees of Ranau in Anderson's THE PLAGUE OF MASTERS! (Smiles)
