Everard prevented:
the founding of a Romano-Saxon English kingdom that was meant to unite Europe, then the world;
the Chinese conquest of North America;
the defeat of the Romans in the Second Punic War;
four Exaltationist schemes to disrupt history;
Sherlock Holmes from deducing the existence of the Time Patrol -
- and he also ensured the emergence of science, liberty and the modern state.
Everard is not responsible for Cyrus the Great but did ensure that that Biblical/historical role was played by the man born to do so and not by a Time Patrolman dragooned into it.
So we have quite a lot to thank him for.
Hi, Paul!
ReplyDeleteTrue, we do own a lot to Manson Everard! But, like him, I have many doubts about the "modern state," in both its autocratic and "democratic" forms. I find it too rigidly centralized and prone to bureaucratic despotism. I lean more to decentralization, even to feudalism (see near the end of "No Truce With Kings" for what one character said about feudalism.

Sean,
ReplyDeleteI knew you would say that! Everard says it himself even while doing his duty as a Patrolman.
Paul.
Hi, Paul!
DeleteBecause both Poul Anderson and I believe in "subsidiarity." And Everard did his duty as a Patrol agent both because he had sworn to and knew too well how unlikely the timelines he helped "delete" would lead to anything better.
